Bus driver caught on camera appearing to doze off at the wheel before crashing into trees in Atlanta

Daily Mail · 22 hours ago

A bus driver in Dunwoody, Georgia, was filmed appearing to fall asleep at the wheel twice before the vehicle veered off the highway and crashed into trees, injuring two passengers. The Metro Atlanta Transit driver has been suspended and charged with distracted driving and failure to maintain lane, while the operator, MARTA, has launched an investigation, calling the incident "unacceptable" and a breach of its safety priorities.

Footage from 7 September shows the driver struggling to stay awake shortly after 11am, briefly roused by an automated message before appearing to doze off again minutes later, his hands slipping from the wheel as his head dropped. The bus then crossed lanes and left the road, throwing one passenger across the vehicle before crashing to a halt in nearby foliage, with tree branches piercing the windows. It remains unclear whether the driver had underlying health or sleep issues; if convicted under Georgia law, he could face fines of up to $1,050 and four points on his licence.
