Bus route changes ‘make no sense’ as Hillsborough locals hit out at plans
Sheffield City Council is consulting on rerouting services 61, 62, 81 and 82 onto a narrow spur of Loxley New Road near Malin Bridge. Residents say the change would add traffic and disruption to their street without meaningfully easing congestion or improving bus journeys.
The proposed route would place a new bus stop outside homes, prompting concerns about privacy, noise, fumes, parked cars and whether buses can fit on the road. Residents say the spur is about three metres wide and that buses would soon rejoin Holme Lane, where traffic lights can already cause delays. The council says the change is intended to reduce delays and improve reliability, but some residents also say they were not directly told about the proposal.
- Sheffield plans to reroute four bus services near Malin Bridge.
- Residents question whether the three-metre spur road can safely take buses.
- The council says the change aims to improve reliability and traffic flow.
Both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Rerouting the services could reduce delays and make journeys more reliable for passengers, particularly if the current route is affected by congestion. A new stop may also improve access for people nearby, and a consultation gives the council a chance to assess residents’ concerns and whether the road can safely accommodate buses.
The case against
Residents have reason to question whether the change would deliver meaningful improvements if buses soon rejoin a congested road where delays persist. Sending buses down a narrow residential spur and placing a stop outside homes could bring noise, fumes, traffic and parking disruption, while concerns about road width and limited direct notice warrant careful consideration.
