Bush dynasty delivers another blow to GOP in Texas Senate battle as family member breaks ranks
Neil Bush, a member of one of Texas’s most prominent Republican families, says he voted early for Democratic Senate hopeful James Talarico. He cited concern about Republican Ken Paxton’s record and admiration for Talarico’s character and principles, while criticising a political culture that puts personal loyalty ahead of accountability.
Bush is the son of former President George H.W. Bush and brother of former President George W. Bush. He is the second family member recently to support Talarico: Barbara Bush, George W. Bush’s daughter, donated $2,500 to a pro-Talarico super PAC in September, according to campaign finance records. The endorsement comes in a closely contested Senate race, where outside groups are spending to support Talarico and oppose Paxton.
In short
- Neil Bush says he voted for Democrat James Talarico.
- He cited concerns about Ken Paxton and political accountability.
- Barbara Bush also recently backed Talarico’s campaign.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Neil Bush’s support for Talarico can be seen as a principled judgement that a candidate’s character and commitment to accountability matter more than party loyalty. Given his concerns about Paxton’s record, backing Talarico may reflect a belief that voters should put integrity and public trust ahead of partisan advantage.
The case against
Republicans who favour Paxton could argue that a prominent family member’s endorsement is a personal choice, not a decisive measure of either candidate’s fitness or the party’s direction. They may also believe that voters should weigh Paxton’s policies and record against Talarico’s, rather than give an opposing candidate support chiefly because of concerns about loyalty or character.
