A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after 17-year-old Levi Brown was shot dead at a high school football season opener in Bakersfield, California, triggering panic as spectators fled the stadium. The shooting occurred at Independence High School on Friday night, just as the game against Centennial High School was getting under way, following a fight that broke out among a group of boys on the south side of the field. Brown, a promising athlete remembered by his former coach as talented but "around the wrong crowd", was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses reported multiple shots fired at around 8pm, sending fans scrambling for exits while players took cover behind shrubbery; footage showed a woman clutching her chest as she was evacuated and others in tears making calls to loved ones. Bakersfield police, who described the incident as an isolated altercation, arrested the unidentified teenage suspect the following day.
