California woman charged with murder for allegedly ‘intentionally’ running over her friend with SUV

Daily Mail · 16 minutes ago

A California woman, Anila Baby, 32, has been charged with murder after allegedly running down her friend Anjana Hari, 35, with an SUV at their apartment complex in Milpitas on 28 August. Prosecutors allege the killing was carried out with "malice aforethought" and involved "great violence, use of a weapon and planning," with a court complaint claiming Baby deliberately accelerated into Hari before fleeing the scene.

Witnesses said Hari and Baby, who lived at the same complex, appeared to be on friendly terms moments before the incident, but one saw the vehicle suddenly accelerate as Hari stepped in front of it, ploughing on to strike three parked cars with no evidence of braking. Police later found Baby, incoherent and injured, in a damaged SUV nearby, and reports suggest the attack followed an earlier alleged stabbing of Baby's roommate, Ann Mathew. All three women are from Kerala, India; Hari, who moved to the US in 2021, is survived by her husband and young daughter, and Indian officials say they are working to repatriate the victims' remains, though timing depends on the ongoing US investigation. Baby is due to be arraigned on 10 September.
