Can Imax, Dolby and New VR Glasses Help Meta Reboot Its Immersive Entertainment Ambitions?

The Hollywood Reporter · 15 hours ago

Meta has unveiled new VR glasses designed to bring cinema-quality entertainment into homes, positioning them as the first Imax Enhanced certified virtual reality device. CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the glasses as a breakthrough, framing them as a way for viewers to experience films in their intended format after theatrical releases—whether that's Christopher Nolan's expanded Imax ratio or James Cameron's 3D vision. This announcement reflects Meta's recalibrated approach to VR: moving away from metaverse ambitions and instead focusing on high-quality devices only when technological breakthroughs justify their release.

The Meta VR Glasses are significantly lighter than previous Meta Quest models at five times the weight of the Quest 3, with most of the device housed in a pocket-sized puck, and they require no controllers—only hand gestures. They feature Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support and come with partnerships from major entertainment players including Disney (which will stream over 100 live events) and James Cameron, whose new Billie Eilish film will be exclusive to the platform. Meta's entertainment lead emphasised that the glasses are intended as a post-theatrical option for viewers, not a competitor to cinemas, allowing people to watch premium content in high quality rather than on mobile devices or aeroplane screens.
