Canadian politician tears into EA and calls for federal support of BioWare
A Canadian petition calling for federal support to help BioWare become independent has passed the signature threshold for presentation in the House of Commons. NDP leader Don Davies has backed the proposal and criticised EA’s decision to close the Edmonton studio, bringing the campaign to save BioWare into wider political debate.
The petition has 3,488 signatures, above the 500 required, and the government must respond within 45 days of its presentation. It seeks funding to help BioWare buy back its independence and intellectual property from EA, while protecting Canadian businesses and cultural institutions. The petition does not guarantee support or the studio’s return: the NDP has only five of 343 Commons seats, and EA still controls BioWare’s game rights.
In short
- A petition for federal support of BioWare has cleared the threshold for Commons presentation.
- NDP leader Don Davies has publicly backed the studio and its developers.
- EA still owns BioWare’s intellectual property, and a government response is not a guarantee.
