Three teenagers died when a black Audi A3 crashed through a metal barrier and plunged into the River Wear near Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland on Tuesday afternoon. A 17-year-old boy who was in the vehicle managed to escape and is now in police custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, whilst a witness account suggests the driver may have accidentally put the car into the wrong gear rather than reverse, causing the collision. This tragedy has devastated Sunderland College, where all three deceased students were enrolled.

The car was recovered from the river on Wednesday after submerged for approximately 24 hours, with severe damage to its front and missing bonnet. A witness who observed the crash stated that the vehicle had driven normally into the car park, after which two occupants appeared to swap positions before the incident occurred. The recovery operation took place at the location near Wearmouth Bridge, an area known locally for erratic driving behaviour and skid marks, though the witness disputed that such driving was occurring at the time of this crash.
