Joanne Dagostina says a builder’s work left her home structurally unsafe and caused severe stress for her family in the run-up to her wedding. The case forms part of a wider fraud in which Patrick Hartley cheated 13 households in the North West out of nearly £700,000; he was jailed for three years and nine months last month.
Dagostina and her husband hired Hartley in 2022 for a kitchen and extension, initially quoted at £34,000 and expected to take 12 weeks. The project took seven months, and the couple paid more than £70,000; after an engineer warned the house and neighbouring property were at risk, the work had to be ripped out and steel supports installed. Dagostina says the disruption, extra costs and rows nearly led the couple to call off their wedding.
