Carlos Acosta returns to the stage in Myths and Modern Masters, a mixed programme at the Royal Opera House drawing dancers from both Birmingham Royal Ballet and Acosta Danza, the Cuban company he also directs. Now 53, Acosta no longer has the physical prowess of his younger years but compensates with stage presence and experience, notably in José Limón's 1949 work The Moor's Pavane and the intimate duet Nosotros, both of which suit his gravitas.

The eclectic bill includes Acosta's own Nutracker in Havana Suite, in which he casts himself as a magician opposite his real-life daughter Aila Acosta Holland as Clara, and a show-stopping Diana and Actaeon pas de deux performed by younger dancers Katherine Ochoa and Yasiel Hodelín Bello. The evening closes with Christopher Bruce's Rolling Stones-scored Rooster, a piece the review suggests suits youthful energy more than Acosta's current strengths. The production runs at the Royal Opera House, London, until 9 August.
