A cattle farmer in Queensland, Australia, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 40 years after murdering three members of a neighbouring family and attempting to kill a fourth during a dispute over stolen livestock. Darryl Valroy Young, 63, was convicted by a jury of three counts of murder and one of attempted murder following a four-week trial at the Queensland Supreme Court in Townsville. The judge described the shooting as "heinous" and among the worst kind of offending, noting that Young had opened fire on the family as though he were "killing feral animals" on his property.

Young shot dead Mervyn Schwarz, his wife Maree, and her son Graham Tighe at the gate of his cattle station at Bogie, southwest of Townsville, on 4 August 2022, after summoning them to a meeting there at 8am. He also attempted to kill Graham's brother, Ross Tighe, who underwent lifesaving surgery after escaping the scene. Justice Christopher Johnstone sentenced Young to life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 40 years for the murders, plus a further 16 years for the attempted murder, after the jury deliberated for three days.
