CD Projekt Red says its mysterious Hadar game is its “biggest project to date”, but even after “several good years” it’s seemingly a long way off
CD Projekt Red says Hadar, its planned original game world, is its “biggest project to date”, but development remains at an early stage. The team has a coherent vision and is making small prototypes to test gameplay, though it has not yet entered pre-production.
The game was announced four years ago and is not based on an existing property. As of 31 July, 33 people were working on it, compared with 519 on The Witcher 4, 184 on Cyberpunk 2 and 84 on Project Sirius. CDPR has described The Witcher 4 as its most ambitious project and is targeting a 2028 release.
- Hadar is CD Projekt Red’s biggest project to date.
- It remains in prototyping and has not reached pre-production.
- A 33-person team was working on it as of 31 July.
Both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Calling Hadar CD Projekt Red’s “biggest project to date” may reflect the scale of its original world and long-term creative ambitions, rather than how far development has progressed. Building prototypes before pre-production can help a team test core ideas and avoid committing resources to a weak concept; a small team is consistent with that exploratory stage.
The case against
The description may sound inflated when Hadar has not yet entered pre-production and only 33 people are working on it, especially alongside much larger projects at the studio. After four years since its announcement, the limited progress could reasonably raise questions about how concrete the vision is and whether “biggest” describes a deliverable game or an aspiration.
