Charlton up for sale again as US owners look to cash in after three years

The Guardian · 2 hours ago

Charlton Athletic's American owners have put the Championship club up for sale just three years after taking control, hiring Oakwell Sports Advisory to find a new buyer who would become the club's fifth owner in six years. The move continues a turbulent period of ownership churn at the club that began after fans forced out the unpopular former owner Roland Duchâtelet in 2020, and comes despite recent sporting progress under the current regime.

Global Football Partners, led by Gabriel Brener, paid around £15m for Charlton in 2023 and will be seeking several times that figure, having invested in the stadium and training ground while the men's team returned to the Championship via a League One playoff final win and the women's side earned promotion to the Women's Super League. Oakwell's sales pitch describes Charlton as "the last remaining football club upside opportunity in London", citing potential for five to tenfold equity growth, though the club does not own its Valley stadium, which belongs to Duchâtelet, despite extending the lease until 2040. Charlton declined to comment.
