Game developer Cristina Ramos has shared a demo showing 3D gameplay running on the Playdate, the small yellow handheld console typically known for its minimalist, crank-operated games. The clip, posted to social media, defies expectations of what the device's limited hardware was thought capable of, and highlights how developers continue to find inventive ways to push the platform beyond its intended scope.

The demo shows a work-in-progress level in which the player platforms upward through an interior space before emerging onto a rooftop, where movement resembles the free-running style of Mirror's Edge under an open sky. Ramos said she had been told 3D, and later exterior levels, were impossible on the Playdate, and set out to prove otherwise. The console has also recently been put to inventive use in helping keep Big Ben's chimes on time.
