Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has joined Serie A side Como on a season-long loan, having lost his place as first-choice keeper to new signing Emiliano Martinez. Sanchez started the club's Premier League opener against Fulham but made a costly error, and Chelsea subsequently signed Martinez from Aston Villa before dropping Sanchez from the squad entirely, marking a sharp reversal in his standing at Stamford Bridge.

Sanchez, 28, had been Chelsea's number one since arriving from Brighton in 2023, making 112 appearances and winning the Conference League and Club World Cup, but was deemed surplus following his mistake in the 3-2 win over Fulham. Chelsea signed Martinez for £7.5m and also have Mike Penders, a £17m arrival from Genk, as goalkeeping options. Como, managed by Cesc Fabregas, have an option to buy Sanchez at the end of the loan and have also signed striker Moise Kean from Fiorentina.
