Mauricio Pochettino has said Chelsea should be stripped of their 2016-17 Premier League title over financial rule breaches, with the trophy retrospectively awarded to Tottenham, who he managed to a second-place finish that season. His comments follow findings that Chelsea broke financial rules during the Roman Abramovich era, including using unlicensed agents and obscuring transfer dealings, with the affected deals including those that brought Eden Hazard, Willian, David Luiz and Nemanja Matic to the club.

Chelsea were fined £10m by the Football Association in July and given a suspended two-window transfer ban, having already been fined £10.75m by the Premier League in March; the breaches, spanning 2009 to 2022, were self-reported by the club's BlueCo ownership after it took over from Abramovich, helping Chelsea avoid a points deduction. Pochettino's Spurs side finished seven points behind Antonio Conte's title-winning Chelsea team that year, and he argued that a lack of a level playing field affected the outcome, insisting he would say the same had it been Tottenham found to have broken the rules.
