Cher Hits Michael Douglas With Kindness After Actor’s ‘Moonstruck’ Oscar Diss
Cher’s representative responded warmly after Michael Douglas questioned her 1988 best actress Oscar win for *Moonstruck*, saying Cher “adores Michael Douglas”. The exchange followed Douglas’s public view that Glenn Close should have won instead, drawing a playful rebuke from Close.
Douglas made the comments on *The Graham Norton Show* on 30 October, recalling that Close was nominated for *Fatal Attraction* and that Cher won that year. Close, who has received eight Oscar nominations without a competitive win, is due to receive an Academy Honorary Award on 15 November. Cher also won a Golden Globe for *Moonstruck* and had an Oscar supporting-actress nomination for *Silkwood*.
In short
- Cher’s representative says she adores Michael Douglas.
- Douglas said Glenn Close deserved the 1988 Oscar.
- Close is due to receive an honorary Academy Award.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Douglas’s view can be understood as a sincere judgement about acting: Glenn Close’s performance in Fatal Attraction was, in his opinion, more deserving of the award, and her eight nominations without a competitive win make the comparison especially resonant. Recognising that does not require dismissing Cher’s achievement or the merits of her Moonstruck performance.
The case against
Cher’s Oscar can be defended on its own merits: she won for Moonstruck, also received a Golden Globe for the role, and had previously earned an Oscar nomination for Silkwood. Award choices are subjective, and Douglas’s preference for Close need not diminish Cher’s accomplishment; the warm response from her representative kept the exchange in that spirit.
Explained simply
The Academy Awards recognise achievements in film, including acting. In 1988, Cher won the best actress Oscar for Moonstruck, while Glenn Close was nominated for Fatal Attraction; Close has since received eight Oscar nominations without a competitive win.
Michael Douglas produced Moonstruck, and his recent remarks revisited the result, saying he thought Close should have won. Close responded playfully, and Cher’s representative said she adores Douglas. Cher also received a Golden Globe for Moonstruck and an Oscar supporting-actress nomination for Silkwood.
