Explained simply
Independent dramas are films made outside the major studio system, often with smaller budgets and production teams. A semi-autobiographical story draws on its writer’s or director’s own experiences, while changing or inventing details; it is not necessarily a literal account of their life.
SM Goldberger is the film’s writer and director and has worked in the adult film industry for more than a decade. The story centres on an adult performer and her mother, bringing together questions of family, work and how someone is seen in public and in private.
Chloë Levine is an actor who plays the central character, Rebekah Rosenberg, whose professional name is Bex Bacall. The project also has links to the film industry beyond its subject: Goldberger has consulted on other films, and the screenplay was developed at a writers’ camp.
