Cholera killed 1,800 in 2026 in Democratic Republic of Congo according to WHO
The World Health Organization says cholera has killed about 1,800 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo this year, amid what it calls the country’s worst outbreak in decades. The epidemic is unfolding alongside a deadly Ebola outbreak, adding pressure to health services and response efforts.
About 60,000 cholera cases have been recorded, with most detected in North and South Kivu in the east. Cases are also being reported along the Congo River basin, raising concern the disease could reach Kinshasa; conflict and hard-to-access areas are complicating containment, while the rainy season may further the spread. WHO put the fatality rate at around 3%, high for cholera.
