Explained simply
Frankenstein is a story first told in Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel, in which a scientist creates a living being from dead body parts. Later books and films have reworked the tale, often focusing on the creature’s loneliness and the question of who is responsible for its creation.
The Bride! is Maggie Gyllenhaal’s 1930s Chicago-set take on that tradition. Jessie Buckley plays a murdered woman brought back to life as the Bride, while Christian Bale plays the creature; their story also involves romance and crime. The film’s approach gives a familiar monster tale new characters and a different point of view.
