“Christmas Wrapping” Songwriter Is A Huge Olivia Rodrigo Fan And Says Her New Single Is An “Homage,” Not A Ripoff
Olivia Rodrigo’s first Christmas single, “take me home (4 christmas)”, prompted comparisons to the Waitresses’ 1981 song “Christmas Wrapping”. The older song’s co-writer, Christopher Butler, has rejected accusations of plagiarism, calling the resemblance an homage and praising Rodrigo’s track.
Butler said Rodrigo contacted him before the release and that they met at her show in Columbus the previous week. He described himself as a fan and wished her success, while noting that he and his companions paid for their tickets. Rodrigo also released a melancholy Christmas B-side, “miss this christmas”, available exclusively on vinyl and cassette.
In short
- Christopher Butler says Rodrigo’s Christmas song is an homage, not plagiarism.
- He says Rodrigo contacted him before its release.
- Her melancholy B-side is exclusive to vinyl and cassette.
