Speaking on the Hugo Décrypte YouTube channel, the Oscar-winning director said he had never seen a technology "advancing so rapidly" while being "so completely rejected by the public," and praised young people in particular for their scepticism, citing the popularity of the term "AI slop" as a healthy response.

Nolan's comments come as Elon Musk continues to promote an AI-generated rival to Nolan's film The Odyssey, claiming X's tool Grok Imagine will produce a "historically accurate" version of Homer's epic by the end of 2026; Musk has also criticised the ethnicity of some of Nolan's cast, which Nolan has dismissed as "irrelevant." The remarks also come amid wider debate over AI's role in Hollywood and beyond, with SAG-AFTRA backing the Trump administration's AI policy framework and Trump having signed an executive order last month establishing a voluntary 30-day government review period for new AI models before release.
