Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Movie Is Making Gen Z Listen to the Book (EXCLUSIVE)
Christopher Nolan's blockbuster adaptation of "The Odyssey" has significantly boosted listenership of Homer's audiobook on Spotify, particularly among younger audiences, in what the industry is calling the "Nolan Bump". The film, starring Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland, has become a cultural phenomenon, topping box office projections and generating strong critical acclaim and awards buzz, with its popularity now clearly spilling over into renewed interest in the original text.
According to Spotify, "The Odyssey" audiobook has been streamed across 91 editions in 10 languages, amounting to more than 43 years of cumulative listening. Listens jumped over 240% in June ahead of the film's release, surged more than 500% on the 17 July opening day, and are on track to rise around 680% overall since the premiere. Gen Z accounts for 36% of listeners and Millennials 45%, with men making up 63% of the audience. Book sales have also risen, with Circana BookScan reporting a 76% increase across all editions of the text this year.
