‘Chucky’ Creator Fires Back At Nicki Minaj for Making the Killer Doll a Republican in ‘Vote Red’ Post: ‘Chucky Has a Trans Kid and Is Anti-ICE’
Nicki Minaj posted an apparently AI-created image of Chucky wearing a pink suit and a “Vote Red” pin on Election Day. Franchise creator Don Mancini rejected the Republican portrayal, saying the character’s story and values make him a poor fit for MAGA politics.
Mancini described Chucky as having a transgender child, protecting dolls and opposing ICE, and posted an image of the doll with blue hair. Chucky’s child Glen/Glenda appeared in the 2004 film *Seed of Chucky*; Mancini created the franchise with *Child’s Play* in 1988. The television series ran for three seasons from 2021 to 2024, while the most recent feature film, *Cult of Chucky*, was released in 2017.
In short
- Minaj cast Chucky as Republican in an Election Day post.
- Creator Don Mancini said the character opposes ICE and supports a trans child.
- Chucky’s series ran for three seasons, ending in 2024.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Minaj’s post can be read as political satire or fan expression, using a familiar horror character to signal support for Republicans without claiming to speak for the franchise’s creator. People may also argue that a character’s meaning is open to interpretation and that a playful image need not settle the character’s politics.
The case against
Mancini created Chucky and has a strong basis for explaining how the character’s story and values inform his interpretation. Given Chucky’s transgender child and Mancini’s stated opposition to ICE, presenting the doll as a MAGA supporter can seem at odds with the franchise’s themes and may misrepresent the creator’s work.
