Cities Skylines meets Balatro in the absorbing roguelike city builder Combolands

Polygon · 5 hours ago

Combolands: Roguelike Citybuilder, developed by Crux Games, blends the deck-building, combo-chain logic of the poker roguelike Balatro with the strategic tile placement of city builders such as Cities: Skylines. According to hands-on impressions from a demo, the game succeeds where many Balatro-inspired titles fail, offering an "absorbing" and "uniquely satisfying" experience by turning adjacency bonuses, a familiar mechanic in city-building games, into the central combo-driven challenge.

Each run begins on a procedurally generated island, giving players eight weeks (turns) to hit a population target using a limited set of weekly actions and rerolls. Early buildings, such as hunter's huts and apiaries, gain value from proximity to resources, while later, higher-tier buildings add multipliers or require broader conditions, such as enclosure by walls or proximity to "nature" tiles, forcing players to rethink earlier layouts. As in Balatro, clearance thresholds rise each round, luck and planning both matter, and losing runs is frequent, though the demo rewards failure with new unlockable options for future attempts.

  • Combolands mixes Balatro-style combo chains with Cities: Skylines-style city building.
  • Players place buildings on a procedurally generated island to hit population goals.
  • Adjacency bonuses and multipliers create escalating, Balatro-like combo challenges.
