Sheffield City Council is moving ahead with plans to permanently close Division Street to traffic, with a report to councillors confirming that the temporary closure has now effectively been formalised through an experimental traffic order. The street, shut off since June 2020 as a Covid-era measure, is set to stay closed as part of a wider scheme to improve walking, wheeling and cycling routes between the city centre, the university and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Division Street, closed between Westfield Terrace and Rockingham Street, was shut alongside Upper Pinstone Street, with buses rerouted around the city centre to accommodate the change. Councillors on the finance and performance policy committee will meet next Monday to consider raising the project's budget from £126,000 to £170,000, after an initial closure proposal was scrapped in favour of a revised scheme. The council intends to seek further funding from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, as the closure forms part of a broader push for a greener city centre with cleaner air, better public transport access, and support for local businesses and hospitality venues.
