Court hears Chowdhury denied civil service work while holding overlapping jobs

Daily Mail ·

Kashim Chowdhury, 55, is accused of concealing existing government work while taking on multiple overlapping jobs. Prosecutors say the arrangement let him earn £280,000 from five full-time posts at its peak, raising questions about how recruitment checks and oversight worked.

Southwark Crown Court heard that between February 2020 and September 2023, Chowdhury held eight jobs and earned £349,378 in total, with one period involving contracts totalling 183 hours a week. Application forms for roles including posts at the Home Office and Department for Business and Trade showed him answering “no” when asked if he was already a civil servant, although he listed Tower Hamlets council in his work history. A recruitment witness said some documents showed a formal offer had been made but did not prove he took up the role; other applications were rejected or withdrawn. Chowdhury denies the allegations.

  • Chowdhury allegedly held five full-time jobs at once.
  • He earned £349,378 across eight jobs, the court heard.
  • Some applications showed “no” to existing civil service employment.
