The couple had experienced relationship difficulties since an argument in 2022 following Laura's birth, though Shaw's wife told police they were "getting along well" before the tragedy. Shaw had been struggling with severe depression for six months after losing $300,000 in a failed Japanese property investment, and a friend claimed he expressed suicidal intentions ten days before the incident. Police noted that Shaw suffered from high anxiety levels and suicidal thoughts but had never sought psychiatric treatment.
