Clashes, Fires And Looting Break Out As Protesters Rally Across France, Joining Students

HuffPost ·

Hundreds of thousands of people marched across France on Saturday over rising living costs and poor conditions in schools, with student groups and a major labour union among the organisers. Violent clashes, fires and looting broke out alongside largely peaceful demonstrations, prompting President Emmanuel Macron to condemn the disorder and say those responsible would be prosecuted.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said 110 marches drew about 550,000 people and that roughly 400 people were arrested; organisers estimated the turnout at 800,000. In Paris, police used tear gas and water cannons after masked protesters threw objects, while vehicles and a newspaper kiosk burned and shops were looted. Incidents were also reported in cities including Lyon, Marseille and Limoges, amid anger over fuel, energy and food prices and concerns about public services.
