Anthropic has upgraded Claude’s voice mode so that it can use its more capable Sonnet and Opus AI models, rather than relying solely on the smaller Haiku model. The change is intended to improve responses to more complex spoken requests and adds access to connected services such as Gmail and Slack, subject to user permission.

Paid users’ voice conversations will default to the model most recently used for text chat, with the option to switch models during a conversation. The feature remains turn-based rather than fully simultaneous, meaning Claude listens, pauses and then responds; it also cannot automatically detect a mid-conversation language change. The beta is rolling out across desktop, mobile and web, while free users are limited to Haiku and one connected app.
