Sheffield City Council is renewing its climate bond scheme after the first £1m raised helped fund solar panels for schools. A second bond, expected later in 2026, aims to support more solar installations and other climate projects, reducing emissions and energy costs while generating income for schools, communities and the council.

The original bond launched in December 2025 and allowed residents to invest from £5, receiving returns over five years and their initial investment back. The council has agreed to a 25-year contract to operate and maintain panels on 21 schools; the electricity will be used on site, with surplus potentially sold to the national grid.
