COL Group, CP Group Strike 360-Degree Partnership to Grow Thailand’s Short-Form Drama Industry

Variety ·

COL Group and CP Group have announced a wide-ranging partnership designed to develop Thailand's short-form drama industry, combining creative talent training, local content adaptation and distribution under a single strategy. The tie-up matters because it links a global player in vertical/micro-drama content with one of Thailand's largest conglomerates, potentially accelerating the growth of Thai-language short-form entertainment and giving local creators a clearer route into the industry.

The deal includes a joint talent incubation programme with a Thai academic institution, a "Thai Remake Collaboration" to localise titles from COL Group's and FlareFlow's libraries using AI-assisted production tools, and a dedicated FlareFlow Mini section within the Tatang by TrueID app, launching in September with weekly new titles. COL Group brings its content library and production expertise, having built FlareFlow into a leading vertical drama platform with more than 45 million registered users, while CP Group contributes its Thai creator network, market knowledge and consumer reach through subsidiary True Corporation, spanning telecoms, e-payments and retail across its 23-country operations.

Short-form dramas are scripted stories made for brief episodes, often watched on mobile phones in a vertical format. The format has grown alongside apps that release episodes in quick succession, giving viewers a way to follow a longer story in short bursts.

COL Group is a media company behind FlareFlow, a platform for vertical dramas. CP Group is a Thai conglomerate whose subsidiary True Corporation operates services including telecoms and the TrueID app; its local reach could connect programmes with Thai audiences.

The partnership brings together international drama content and production experience with CP Group’s knowledge of Thailand and its creator network. It concerns how shows may be adapted, made and distributed, as well as how people entering the industry could develop their skills.

Both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

The partnership enables rapid professionalisation of Thailand's short-form drama sector by combining proven production expertise with deep local market knowledge and consumer reach, offering structured training and guaranteed distribution pathways that could establish Thai creators internationally whilst ensuring culturally authentic storytelling adapted to local audiences rather than generic global content.

The case against

The concentration of industry development under two large corporations raises legitimate concerns about marginalising independent creators and smaller producers, prioritising commercially proven formats over diverse voices, potential data privacy issues with massive user databases spanning millions, and whether the partnership primarily enriches corporate and foreign shareholders rather than Thai creative talent themselves.
