Republican Congressman John Moolenaar, chair of the House Select Committee on China, says TikTok pulled out of a scheduled public roundtable at which its chief security officer would have faced questions on Chinese government access to US user data and the platform's algorithm. Moolenaar claims the company withdrew specifically to dodge scrutiny of its child safety practices, despite this not being the meeting's intended focus, raising fresh concerns about TikTok's accountability to Congress even after a deal reshaping its US operations.

Moolenaar told Bloomberg that TikTok reneged on 27 August, a day after Meta settled with state attorneys general over child safety issues and urged TikTok and YouTube to do the same; all three platforms still face numerous related lawsuits. He said the committee will try to reschedule the session, aiming to get answers before the end of the year under the Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, the law that previously threatened a US TikTok ban before a restructuring deal closed in January.
