COP17: Key outcomes agreed at the UN biodiversity conference in Yerevan
Countries completed the first global review of progress towards the UN biodiversity framework at COP17 in Yerevan. It found that the 2030 goal of reversing nature loss will not be met unless action accelerates, highlighting the gap between commitments and progress.
Developed countries missed their pledge to raise at least $20bn a year for nature by 2025, while environmental funding is set to fall by 27% in 2026–30. Countries agreed that those wishing to join the donor list can signal interest before COP18, and set criteria for a permanent post-2030 finance mechanism, leaving its structure for later talks. Quito will host COP18 in 2028.
In short
- UN review says the 2030 nature goal is off track.
- Developed countries missed the $20bn annual finance target.
- Quito will host the next biodiversity summit in 2028.
