Paradise Park in Hayle has resumed feeding its 26 Humboldt penguins locally caught Cornish sardines, replacing frozen sprats imported from the Netherlands. The change followed a conversation between a keeper and local fisherman Tom Lambourn, and is significant because it supports local fishing while reducing the distance fish must travel.

The park now sources two to three tonnes of sardines annually from Lambourn, whose catch is landed about 10 miles (16km) away. Penguins had eaten sardines previously, but the local supply stopped when the park’s former supplier retired; the new arrangement has also been welcomed by 38-year-old Spneb, believed to be the world’s oldest Humboldt penguin.
