Sheffield City Council has signed an agreement with New Zealand-based Skyline Enterprises to redevelop the long-derelict Parkwood Springs site, home to the original Sheffield Ski Village, which burned down in 2012. The deal marks a breakthrough after 14 years of failed redevelopment attempts, including a collapsed 2018 agreement with consortium EXTREME Destinations over a £22.5 million scheme that was never realised. It matters to the city because the site has sat unused for over a decade despite repeated promises of regeneration.

The first phase of Skyline's plans includes a gravity park offering luge-style downhill karting, a playground, a café and an as-yet-unnamed indoor attraction, with public consultation due next month ahead of a full planning application. Skyline already runs similar gravity parks in New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, South Korea and Malaysia, and is building its first UK site in Swansea. While snow sports are not part of this initial phase, Pete Shipston of the Revive Sheffield Ski Village campaign said he remains hopeful a dry ski slope could feature in a longer-term vision, while Skyline's chief executive Geoff McDonald called Sheffield "the ideal city" for the firm's UK expansion.
