Council leader says city has once-in-a- generation opportunity to transform landmark – The Star

🔎 Sheffield ·

Sheffield City Council leader Fran Belbin has called the planned transformation of Sheffield Central Library a once-in-a-generation opportunity. The Grade II* listed building also houses Graves Gallery and the City Archives, and the project aims to make it more accessible while expanding its cultural and learning offer.

The building, which opened in 1934, has been surrounded by scaffolding and hoardings since concerns arose about loose masonry. Repair costs were previously estimated at about £30 million, but a broader refurbishment is expected to cost more; the council has not yet announced a budget or secured funding. Graves Gallery is due to close on 31 October, with parts of its collection to be stored and others displayed temporarily elsewhere in the city centre.

In short

  • Sheffield plans a major overhaul of its historic central library.
  • The project is expected to cost more than £30 million.
  • Graves Gallery will close temporarily from 31 October.
