Wandsworth Council has warned that council tax bills could almost double, with a proposed rise of £958 for a Band D property, as the Tory-run authority blames a Labour Government funding cut of £84million a year. The council says the shortfall exceeds its combined spending on parks, libraries, leisure centres, bin collection and street cleaning, and it has appealed to the borough's three Labour MPs to back a challenge against the cut, but they have declined to do so, prompting accusations from local Conservatives that they are failing to stand up for residents.

The proposed increase amounts to a 94 per cent rise and was discussed at an extraordinary council meeting, though a final decision is not expected until early next year. Council leader Robert Morritt sought support from Tooting MP Rosena Allin-Khan, Putney MP Fleur Anderson and Battersea MP Marsha de Cordova, but the MPs responded that they could not back a narrative shifting blame from the current Conservative administration, arguing Wandsworth had strong reserves and no debt when Labour left office in May 2026. Deputy council leader Peter Graham said the authority did not want to raise bills but that the Government "must think again" on funding, while the changes stem from Labour's "Fair Funding Review 2.0", which redistributes funding towards areas of higher deprivation.
