Coventry, Ipswich, Hull – promoted trio enjoy positive starts

BBC Sport ·

Coventry, Ipswich and Hull have made encouraging starts after promotion to the Premier League, collecting 31 points between them from their first nine matches. Their form offers early evidence that the three clubs may be better equipped for top-flight football than some newly promoted sides in previous seasons.

Coventry lost their first four games by an aggregate 10-0, but have since won three of five, including a 3-1 victory over Sunderland that lifted them to 15th. Hull and Ipswich have 11 points each, while Coventry have nine; since 2010-11, every promoted team with at least 11 points after nine games has avoided relegation. Coventry also spent more than £140m on 12 permanent signings, and faced three of the current top three in their first four matches.

In short

  • The promoted trio have 31 points after nine games.
  • Hull and Ipswich each have 11 points.
  • Coventry recovered from four opening defeats to reach 15th.

Explained simply

The Premier League is the top division of English men’s football, and each season three clubs join it after winning promotion from the division below. Newly promoted teams have to adjust to stronger opposition and often face a risk of dropping back down.

Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City are the three promoted clubs in this story. Their early results matter because staying in the Premier League brings access to its higher level of competition and revenue, while relegation means returning to the second tier.
