A hit-and-run collision on the A57 near Todwick in April 2025 resulted in the death of Graham Slinn, an 81-year-old pensioner who was crossing at traffic lights with his bicycle. The driver, 20-year-old Cain Byrne, was travelling at excessive speed whilst under the influence of nitrous oxide and fled the scene following the impact. Police subsequently traced and apprehended Byrne, leading to charges of causing death by dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, and operating an uninsured vehicle.

Byrne entered guilty pleas to all charges at Sheffield Crown Court. He was sentenced to 11 years and six months imprisonment with an extended five-year licence period, bringing his total sentence to 16 and a half years, alongside a driving disqualification lasting 17 years and eight months. Slinn's family released a statement highlighting that the death was entirely preventable and expressed grief over losing their father just weeks before his 60th wedding anniversary.
