Police identified the suspect as 41-year-old Andrew Truelove, who reportedly asked for meteorologist Al Roker before confronting Melvin and shouting a racial slur; he was charged with burglary, menacing, criminal trespass and harassment, all classed as hate crimes, plus harassment. A 2023 Los Angeles Times profile described Truelove's history of homelessness and mental health struggles, including PTSD and bipolar disorder, and a prior conviction for stealing memorial signs for Sandy Hook shooting victims, an event he has denied occurred. NBC said the incident happened off-air and confirmed it is cooperating fully with law enforcement while reassessing security at its Rockefeller Center studios.
