“Credible military storytelling”: Ubisoft announce playtests for new Ghost Recon game alongside a sizeable Wildlands update and a Future Soldier giveaway
Ubisoft has announced plans for closed playtests of a new Ghost Recon game through an insider programme, describing it as a return to the series’ tactical action, large-scale operations and “credible military storytelling”. The announcement, made during the franchise’s 25th-anniversary celebrations, signals Ubisoft’s attempt to revive a series whose recent releases and spin-offs have struggled.
Ghost Recon: Wildlands will receive an update restoring a Predator-themed mission, adding Last Rites missions, expanded gameplay settings and visual improvements targeting 4K resolution. Ubisoft is also giving away 2012’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier via Ubisoft Connect until 13 August, although its multiplayer servers closed in 2021; the series’ 2019 Breakpoint release was poorly received and the planned free-to-play Frontline was cancelled in 2022.
