Fire crews will remain at a scrapyard blaze in Barnsley until the end of the week, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (SYFRS) has said. The fire, which produced huge plumes of black smoke, broke out at a yard on Boulder Bridge Lane, Carlton, on Saturday evening and involved old buses, tyres, skips and scrap metal, prompting concern for nearby residents who have been advised to keep windows and doors closed.

The blaze started around 19:00 BST and at its peak required ten fire appliances to tackle. Officer David Newton said crews are still in a firefighting phase, with the cause so far unknown, and that machinery is being brought in to break down the scrap pile to reach the source of the fire. He said the situation is now under control with no risk of further spread, and an investigation into the cause is expected to begin later this week.
