Retiring referee Anthony Taylor says the constant pressure and scrutiny surrounding officiating contributed to a culture of fear, although he says his decision to leave was ultimately based on his body and mind being ready for a new chapter. The 47-year-old argues that criticism from supporters, managers, media and colleagues can undermine referees’ confidence and make mistakes more likely.

Taylor retired after refereeing at his second World Cup, including Spain v Portugal in the last 16, and says ending his career after the tournament allowed him to leave on his own terms. Across 20 years, he officiated 668 English professional matches, every major domestic cup final and 163 internationals; he also believes former referees should be cautious about publicly criticising current officials.
