CSNY travelled by private plane and limousine. Even their dinner plates featured Joni Mitchell’s artwork
Graham Nash said Joni Mitchell was the only witness when he joined David Crosby and Stephen Stills in singing a three-part harmony that inspired them to form a band. Their collaboration became Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, whose success led to tours on a scale that astonished Nash.
The group travelled in private planes, helicopters and limousines with police escorts, while hotels provided embroidered pillowcases featuring Mitchell’s drawing of the four musicians. Their meals were served on teak plates bearing the same design. Nash has also said that performing songs he wrote about Mitchell takes him back to their relationship and can be emotionally difficult.
In short
- Mitchell witnessed the harmony that brought the band together.
- CSNY travelled in private planes, helicopters and limousines.
- Mitchell’s artwork appeared on the band’s pillows and plates.
Explained simply
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young was a rock group formed by David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, later joined by Neil Young. The musicians were already known for their work in other bands, and their close vocal harmonies became a defining part of the group’s sound.
The group’s popularity grew quickly in the late 1960s and 1970s, when large tours and elaborate travel arrangements reflected the growing scale of rock music. Joni Mitchell, a singer-songwriter and visual artist, was closely connected to Nash and the group; her artwork also became part of the musicians’ touring life.
