Curfew imposed in parts of central Paris and other cities after rioting across France

BBC World ·

French authorities have imposed overnight curfews and bans on unauthorised gatherings in parts of Paris and other cities after riots and looting spread across the country. The unrest, which began with students protesting school conditions, has widened to include concerns such as fuel prices, the cost of living and public services, putting pressure on the government to restore order and support affected communities.

More than 2,500 people have been arrested and around 1,000 police officers injured, while one demonstrator reportedly lost a hand to a crowd-control grenade. About 550,000 people joined weekend demonstrations, and more than 2,000 businesses were affected, with damage estimated at hundreds of millions of euros. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said mayors could impose curfews, promised recovery support and said those responsible for property damage would be made to pay.
