The World Health Organization says the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has become the country’s largest ever, surpassing the 2018–20 epidemic. The outbreak is intensifying amid insecurity, displacement and cross-border travel, raising concerns that the virus could spread further within the region and internationally.

Since it was declared on 15 May, the Bundibugyo strain outbreak has caused 3,605 confirmed cases and 1,587 deaths, a 44% fatality rate. The latest week recorded 567 cases and 296 deaths, while infections have also been reported in Uganda and France and two patients were treated in Germany; no approved vaccine or treatment exists for this strain, though candidates are being developed in Singapore and the UK.
