Attackers altered French blood storage settings, but safeguards prevented losses
France’s civilian blood service, the French Blood Establishment (EFS), said attackers tampered with cold-storage controls after compromising a refrigeration supplier. Monitoring systems and safeguards meant no blood samples or products were lost, and the incident did not directly target EFS systems.
Reports say the attackers changed settings from -30°C to 110°C, though that does not mean the equipment or its contents reached 110°C. EFS transferred products to other facilities where needed and notified France’s cybersecurity agency and health ministry. The incident comes amid a wider wave of attacks on refrigeration systems across Europe, causing food spoilage at some retailers; whether the EFS attack used the same route is unclear.
In short
- Attackers tampered with refrigeration controls at France’s blood service.
- Safeguards prevented any loss of blood products.
- The incident coincides with refrigeration attacks affecting European retailers.
