Cyndi Lauper says corporate ownership and relentless commercial demands are squeezing creativity in fashion and music. She argues that sharing her clothes and memorabilia can inspire individual expression at a time when industries are becoming increasingly homogenised.

Her “Suitcase of Memories” exhibition and auction in New York includes DIY outfits, Vivienne Westwood stagewear, her VMA dress, family hand-me-downs and music memorabilia. The public exhibition runs until the live auction on 22 October, with online bidding through 23 October. Lauper points to demands such as Alexander McQueen being expected to stage 12 shows a year as an example of the pressure creatives face.
