A Pennsylvania sheriff's deputy has been charged after prosecutors alleged he covered his own bodycam to secretly photograph naked detainees on his personal iPhone, before sharing the images with female colleagues. Deputy Sheriff Ryan Gaffney of Bucks County was caught out when footage from other officers' bodycams, which he had not obscured, captured him blocking his own device before pulling out his phone during an arrest. The case highlights how bodycam technology, intended to hold police accountable, can be circumvented by an individual officer even as it exposes the same misconduct through colleagues' equipment.

Investigators say the key incident occurred in January 2026, when deputies detained a man during a mental health crisis who was naked from the waist down. Other officers' footage allegedly shows Gaffney donning gloves off, retrieving his iPhone and covering his own camera before appearing to photograph the man. A phone search under a warrant reportedly recovered two nude images, one shared with two contacts and another sent to twelve contacts on four separate occasions, despite Gaffney denying the allegations and providing photo library screenshots that did not show the images; forensic analysis and metadata are said to have located the deleted photos and linked them to specific moments captured on bodycam.
